Illustrators Business Masterclass

Lou Bones (Facilitator Overlord at The Association of Illustrators according to her twitter profile) was magnificent delivering the masterclass at the London Book Fair 2018. She wasn’t feeling well so I would tremble to see her perform on a good day.

Here are some bullet points for those who missed this very informative seminar.

  • Join the AOL, it’s there to support illustrators
  • Understand your value, AOL Price it Right Campaign
  • Have an image based landing page on your website, preferably a Cargo Collective Template
  • Email at the top of the page, get rid of contact forms
  • Study the industry
  • Find your niche
  • Research your preferred clients
  • Build a dream list of clients to contact
  • Address clients personally on a first name basis, get their name right

Social Media

  •  1.Instagram 2.Twitter, possibly Facebook
  • Make your static images move, use gifs

Copright

  • Is a license to use work for given a period of time and place

Contract

A business agreement needs a contract and should include:

  • Payment clause
  • Cancellation clause
  • Rejection clause
  • copyright clause
  • T’s & C’s clause
  • Moral rights clause
  • Delivery dates for roughs and artwork
  • Don’t breach contracts if you are going to miss a deadline renegotiate
  • Be prepared to negotiate for better fees and terms
  • Be prepared to say no
  • Clarify who the client is, it isn’t necessarily the comissioner
  • Educate yourself about what sort of fees to expect and how to negotiate with clients
